Caring Too Much or Caring Too Little

Caring too much often leads to unhappiness, burnout, or a stressful relationship with others. It leads to unhappiness because often the outcome of a project has too many variables that are out of our control, so rarely do a project turns out to be perfect. It leads to burnout because laser focused on something we care too much too long is not sustainable. It leads to a stressful relationship with others because no one wants to work with a control freak.

Caring too little often leads to reduced productivity, sloppy work, or a stressful relationship with others. It leads to reduced productivity because we don’t care much about it anyway. Why put in the effort? It leads to sloppy work because we simply can’t do a good job when we care so little about what we do. It leads to a stressful relationship with others because no one wants to work with someone who is not dependable.

The sweet spot is where one cares enough that they will do a decent job, happy about the outcome, and maintain a great relationship with others. It takes self-reflection and constant adjustment to get there.
