Nothing lasts forever. Except diamonds of course! Almost everything in life is a wear item if we look at it through a long enough time horizon.
Take a hand plane as an example, every time I sharpen the blade, it gets a bit shorter. Once the blade is used up, a new one must be purchased for the hand plane to continue working.
This morning we had an HVAC contractor replacing the compressor in our LG fridge. It stopped working last Saturday when we woke up to a puddle of water in the kitchen Sunday morning. The compressor only lasted 6 years. Not great!
Before I bought my new laptop, I was using a MacBook Air for 10 years. I replaced the battery in year 5. The SSD wore out in year 6. The power cord has been patched in two different places. It is still good at browsing websites and light duty office work. Not great when running Xcode. Oh, it does not run the latest MacOS because that model is no longer supported.
Because everything wears given a long enough time frame, we will all be buying something to replace or repair something else.
